Dance of the Princesses
Today this morning I had my grade 6 viola exam! How exciting! I think it went alright, but I messed the sight-singing up quite badly! The pieces I played were “Siciliano” by Vivaldi, “Danza Espagnola” by Granados and “Dance of the Princesses” (like the title) by Stravinsky.
There seems to be quite a few people who are unsure what exactly a viola is, so I thought I’d tell you all about them.
A viola is like a bigger violin, and from a distance they don’t look particularly different. They are both played in exactly the same way (though actually someone did once mak a big viola that could be played like a cello), however a viola has a much richer, more mellow sound than a violin. The four strings on a violin are G, D, A and E, whereas the four strings on a viola are C, G, D and A. There fore you could say that a viola is a “string lower” than a violin. Violins read music from a treble clef, which looks like this:
whereas a viola reads music from an alto clef, which looks like this:
The reason for this is because the viola’s notes are a little too low to be written on a treble clef stave, but too high to be written on a bass clef, the other commonly used clef.
Hopefully this has given you a better idea of what a viola is!

Thanks for that info!!!! I now know what a Viola is!!! YAY!!! I’ve laways wondered it’s differences to a Violin and now I know!!
And I also wondered what an Alto clef was too!!!!
